Commissioner, DC Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs
Ms. Margarita Varela serves as Commissioner in the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs where she advises the Mayor on issues affecting the Latino community. She has had a wide range of professional experiences in both the public and private sectors. In the public sector Ms. Varela has worked at the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C. In the private sector she has worked at the management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton and Honeywell Aerospace.
Ms. Varela is recipient of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers - Young Engineer of the Year Award and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers - Hispanic in Technology Award for her contributions to the engineering profession and community leadership. More recently, she was recognized by Prospanica D.C. wth a 40 Under 40 Award. Ms. Varela was recognized for her technical excellence as an industrial engineer, as well as her effective fundraising to provide scholarships to women and minority students living in our area.
Ms. Varela is also the founder of the Puerto Rican Diaspora Summit - Washington, DC, an annual conference that provides a space for the discussion of policy issues and the articulation of community responses from the perspective of Puerto Ricans living in the Washington, DC area. Her main interest is to design and implement diaspora-led initiatives that generate social progress and economic growth in Puerto Rico.
